Harry Potter Program at the Children's Library
08/21/2007In response to parents’ concerns regarding the loss of two key characters in the final Harry Potter novel, members of the Sacred Heart Staff held a special program on the topic of grief and loss at the Children’s Library in Scranton on June 23rd.
Parents and their children were split into two groups. Adults attended a session facilitated by our Bereavement Coordinator, Jennifer Seechock, who encouraged the parents to openly discuss their own experience with grief and how to help their children develop appropriate coping skills.
Activities for the kids included favorite characters from the popular series. The participants made their own Hedwig (Harry’s owl) and were encouraged to write down their thoughts about loss. Then they attached the notes to Hedwig’s feet and “sent him” to a castle drawn to replicate Hogwarts (Harry’s school).
Everyone participated in the celebratory wrap-up, complete with Harry Potter cookies. Children were given their crafts and goodie bags to take with them and parents were encouraged to talk to their kids about the day’s activities.
